AI phone assistant for driving schools

Bookings and test-date questions arrive while the instructor is in a car. Tel-Agent answers, gets the licence class, and books the callback.

  • Licence class
  • Which instructor
  • Test date

Why a driving school cannot answer while teaching

A driving school's staff spend the working day in a car with somebody who is learning to drive. There is no reception, and the phone rings anyway - mostly from people at the very start, asking what it costs and how long it takes, who will ring the next school on the list if nobody picks up.

How the AI receptionist handles a driving school enquiry

  1. It answers while the instructor is teaching.

  2. It asks which licence class the caller wants.

  3. It asks whether they have already passed the theory test.

  4. It takes which instructor they were recommended, and when they can take lessons.

  5. The enquiry lands complete, so the callback is an answer rather than a second interview.

What a driving school assistant should and should not do

What it does

  • Answers while every instructor is in a car
  • Takes the licence class and theory status
  • Records the requested instructor and availability
  • Proposes lesson times and confirms them
  • Keeps pupil details on the school's own machine

What it never does

  • Write into a live instructor diary
  • Quote a package price that was not given to it
  • Promise a test date
  • Advise on eligibility, medical conditions or licences
  • Send pupil data to a third-party booking service

Questions

Why does a driving school need this?

Because the person who would answer the phone is in a car teaching somebody to drive. There is no reception, and the calls arrive anyway - mostly from people at the very start, asking what it costs and how long it takes.

What does it ask a learner booking a first lesson?

Which licence class, whether they already have a theory pass, which instructor they were recommended, and when they can take lessons. Enough to send back a real answer instead of a callback that starts from nothing.

Can it book a lesson?

It proposes and confirms, or writes into a review list. It does not write into a live diary - one wrong entry in a driving school's schedule costs an instructor a whole slot.

Can it tell a caller what a licence costs?

Only from the school's own price list. Lesson counts vary by person, so the honest answer to how much it costs in total is one an instructor gives after a first lesson, not one an assistant guesses.

Does it know which instructors are free?

It takes which instructor was asked for and when the pupil can attend, and proposes times. It does not write into a live diary - one wrong entry costs an instructor a whole slot.

What about test dates?

It records that a caller is asking about one and what class they are taking. Booking or moving a test is done through the official system, which is a person's job.

Does the EU AI Act allow an AI to answer a lesson booking?

Yes, under Article 50 of Regulation 2024/1689, which asks that the caller be told they are speaking to a machine - that line belongs in the greeting you configure. Nothing about this work falls under Annex III, the list of high-risk uses. The distinction the Act draws is between assisting and deciding, and this agent assists: it never assesses a learner or decides that somebody is ready for a test. Austria's KI-Servicestelle at RTR publishes the same reading of the transparency duty.

Who is the data controller for what a caller to a driving school says on the phone?

You are. A lesson booking is ordinary personal data, often about people under eighteen, and Tel-Agent is self-hosted with your own model keys, so the recording, the transcript and the record it writes stay on your server and never reach Dpro GmbH. There is no processor agreement to sign with us because we never receive the data, and the source is AGPL-3.0, so you can check that rather than take our word for it.

Can a driving school run this in the United States?

There is no single federal AI statute to comply with, but a phone line carries older rules. The TCPA governs automated outbound calls, and consent to record is set state by state. Consent to record is set state by state, and California and Illinois among others want every party to agree. Running the software yourself makes you the caller of record, so the disclosure and the recording switch are yours to set.

Not usable yet. The day it answers a real call will be a release, not a newsletter.
